Tweeting for Earth Day

An oil spill off the coast of California inspired the first Earth Day on April 22, 1970. Since then, the idea of focusing on our environment has grown year by year until Earth Day is now a worldwide event.

Leading up to this year’s Earth Day activities, groups and businesses are using social media marketing to build support, encourage participation, and align themselves with the environmental movement. It’s a great way to reach the digital generation, in particular. Here are just three examples. Watch for many more as April 22nd approaches!

  • The U.S. Department of Environmental Protection is using the #EarthDay hashtag in its tweets about April 22.
  • The Earth Day Network is also using the #EarthDay hashtag in its tweets to inspire a “Billion Acts of Green” in 2011. Its Facebook pages feature ideas for getting involved, photos of Earth Day projects, and comments from supporters.
  • Procter & Gamble is offering a new “Find Your Footprint” app—downloadable starting in Earth Day—to show the green side of its social responsibility.
